Bela Lugosi, born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó, was a Hungarian-American actor best known for his portrayal of Count Dracula in the 1931 film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. He began his acting career on the Hungarian stage in 1902 and appeared in numerous productions before emigrating to the United States in the early 1920s.
Lugosi’s performance as Dracula on Broadway in 1927 brought him significant acclaim, leading to his iconic role in the 1931 film. His portrayal set the standard for cinematic vampires and became a defining moment in horror film history.
Despite his success, Lugosi struggled with typecasting and found it challenging to secure roles outside the horror genre.
