George ‘Gabby’ Hayes, born George Francis Hayes, was an American actor renowned for his roles as the grizzled, bewhiskered sidekick in numerous Western films during the 1930s and 1940s. Despite his on-screen persona, Hayes was known off-screen as a well-groomed and articulate individual.
He began his career in vaudeville and transitioned to film in the late 1920s. Hayes gained fame portraying Windy Halliday alongside Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) from 1935 to 1939. After a salary dispute, he moved to Republic Pictures, adopting the name Gabby Whitaker due to naming rights issues.
As Gabby, he appeared in over 40 films between 1939 and 1946, often alongside Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Wild Bill Elliott. Hayes also played sidekick roles to Western icons Randolph Scott and John Wayne. In the 1950s, he hosted “The Gabby Hayes Show,” a Western series on NBC and later ABC.
